Totally disconnected

I never realised how much I depend on technology in my classroom. I know I’ve been trying to integrate it into my classroom but now I’ve a digital classroom.

The reason I know this is because we have been without network and internet connection for three days now. Here is how it has affected classroom life:

No working on our wikispaces

No sending each other messages (via wikispaces accounts)

No online games in Literacy or Maths.

No using the computer dictionary.

Or viewing Teachertube resources.

As for me I have an issue as a professional on the follow levels:

No email- the worst is being disconnected from Louise as we were due to launch Edcast

I can’t even get remote access to my email due to unknown problems.

No skyping with Room 18 or Voyagers.

Can’t confirm the next Edcast or get a message to Peter Holmes from
Otford, Australia who is due to arrive next week for a flying visit.

I’m also panicking about that visit because he is coming to observe my use of ICT in the classroom, particularly skypetalkandwrite, which has ground to a halt due to technical difficulties on the network.

As I said I am totally disconnected and can only access my blog, gmail, and internet generally in the evenings.

Ahhhhh!

TeacherTube- “School 1.0 v School 2.0 “On your marks…”"

Here it is, my second effort after “Why teach technology?” into the TeacherTube zone of inspiring teachers to investigate the Pandora’s box that is Web 2.0.

I was culling my folder entitled “Web discussions” where I store past posts and bits and pieces I’ve cut and pasted for use later on. I came across the words included in me second video presentation; I think I got them off Durff’s Blog, if it wasn’t from there it was someone similarly thoughtful, observant and insightful, but it sounds like Durff to me. Anyway here it is entitled: “School 1.0 v School 2.0 “On your marks…””

Teaching Sagittarian will laugh at me as I still am unable to embed my own videos and Miguel of Around the Corner will no doubt roll his eyes at me as, yes, I used PhotoStory3 yet again. I’m not sure this presentation is going to give Vicki Davies the ‘chills’ like last time, but them I feel this is more of a Die Hard 2 moment rather then a Godfather II. What do you think?

Teaching Sagittarian check this out, I DID IT! (Thanks to the new embed feature for WordPress on TeacherTube )

Good question…

Given the realities of our modern age and the demands of our children's future, is it really okay to allow teachers to choose whether or not they incorporate modern technologies into their instruction?

You know when you add another blog to your feeder you get about 10 older posts…. Well I did that for dangerouslyirrelevant and came across this great question.

In my most humble opinion: the answer is of course not!

The answer I fear is a little more complicated in terms of the institutional nature of education. We have a much more flexible system here in New Zealand than other countries we could blog about.

My Question to New Zealand is, What are we doing to address the above mentioned question in light of the fact that we have so much more governance at the school level? What a huge responsibility to place on the shoulders of Principals and senior management without the ‘Green Light’ from the Ministry.

A brave school it would be that placed ICT litracy front and centre.
