Out of the mouths of babes… well, 8 year olds

As the year end approaches my school is seeking out my students views and as I have to summarise their thoughts I thought I could do it here. Previously I began the process some weeks ago and posted here. But now is the time to complete the form.

Discuss the school’s Mission Statement:

Peterhead School will provide our children with the opportunity to develop their talents and abilites fully, within a warm supportive and caring environment.

What does ‘quality learning and behaviour’ mean?

It means that you can  learn and be brainy. It also means obiedience- doing as you’re told. It’s about doing quality work, following the rules and demonstrating Good behaviour like being sensible.

What is a ‘caring environment’?

To my students a ‘caring environment is about sharing their ideas in class, keeping the classroom clean. And making your classroom a special place.

How do we make our classroom a special place?

We can clean up, put everything in the right place and have sensible kids, make sure we are all friends,

What ‘opportunities’ should the school provide?

Setting us boundaries and limits. Giving us rules. Let us do jobs and take responsibility.

Giving us new things like maths games reading games and writing books and stuff to play with a morning tea.

What does their ‘full potential’ mean?

Trying your hardest. Being ready ready for high school and college.Reaching my goals Being brainy. Helping other people.

What kind of skills do you think you will need to learn in class to be successful in the future?

Positive attitude, bake stuff like cakes and get paid for it. Computer Skills- like how to get on the internet and use google to find stuff. Skills of how to fix a car.

What are the responsibilites of students to their teachers, the school and fellow students?

Being very nice and kind. Respect each other. Look after them like they’re your mum and dad. Being nice and friendly. Be nice to your teachers and not naughty.

What qualities make a great teacher?

They are nice, and kind. They are caring helpful. They teach you to respect. They use their manners. They are nice to us and let us go out for PE.

How do great teacher help students learn?

Make us learn for the future by teaching us to write and read. By talking and showing us. Do amazing things to make us brainy like help us when we are stuck.

These are the raw results.. I found them interesting and will be posting later….

  1. Hey Simon I have enjoyed reading what your 8 yr olds think about school. I find it interesting that when we interview children their thoughts are often what is talked about from the front eg: Principal, class Teacher, etc. The young children especially only have a limited vocabulary from which they share and have not developed the ability to express their feelings exactly. It’s the “well used phrases” that we all have that often are shared by the children. HOWEVER you do often gain some valuable nuggets in our inquiry. Hey I look forward to your write up!
