Here’s the latest episode of On the Road. A few rambling thoughts as I drive back from the conference. Excuse the car noise… If anyone has ideas about filtering background noise on Audacity let me know.

  1. I hope you don’t play the intro music on the guitar while you are driving too!!! Thanks for sharing with those of us that couldn’t attend.

  2. Removing noise from an audacity file is fairly straight forward Simon. You need to highlight a section of your audio file that does not have you speaking on it, but has the noise that you wish to remove. Then you need to go to the ‘effects’ toolbar and then select ‘noise removal’ option. Noise removal is a two stage process. Click on the ‘get noise profile’ option nb nothing seems to happen at this juncture, but what Audacity has done is sample the section of the track that you have highlighted. Now you need to return to your audio file and select the entire track, then click on Effects>Noise Removal and this time select option 2, Remove noise. I suggest that you slide the slider to the left and click on the preview button to see if you have removed enough or too much of the back ground. If you remove to much you can sound as though you have your head in a bucket! Once you are happy with the result you can click on the remove noise button and your track will be cleaned up. You can repeat this as many times as you like, but it will also affect the foreground noise too, ie you! You may well have to subsequently amplify your voice and also play around with other effects to enhance your voice, but the above method works in most cases.

It was great to bump into you again, although we did not get time to chew the fat, maybe we could in Christchurch later in the year?

  3. I got more out of what other people heard from Julia Atkin’s keynote than I got out of listening first hand. I didn’t understand what she meant when I was listening to her.

I regret not taking my iPod with me to record conversations at L@S.

The whole conference was great- the people, the network, the learning. I think Richard Millwood saved the keynotes with his interactivity and interest. It was a pity many had given up by then or had to catch flights out.

Our Did You Know NZ session was great. I liked to see the whiteboard really being used in an educationally sound way.

I hope that you were obeying all the road rules on the way home- your podcast reminded me of David Walick’s intro to K12 on line in 2006
