Thought of the week: Me too

Let me break it down for you. People don’t want to sit in the dark for an hour in 2009. Period.

http://yoursay.footprintfriends.com/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer.Components.SiteFiles/earth_2D00_hour.jpg I am all in favor of efforts to promote the health of the environment. I will pay higher taxes on fossil fuels. I will support investment in green technologies. I will support investments in biofuels and alternative energy. I will support higher CAFE standards and substantial investments in mass transit. I will support efforts to protect endangered species, wetlands, and to preserve pristine tracts of land. I will reside in an eco-friendly abode as soon as it is economically feasible. I recycle. I use reusable bags when I shop. I will carpool. I’ll do all of that, and I am sure I will do more.

But I’m not going to sit in the damned dark for an hour. That is just silly.

As I was watching TV the Heineken commercial came on. Now, its not the first time I saw it, probably more like the 30th. But it reminded me of the fact that I love that piece of music- the 32seconds of the commercial I do, so I went looking for it and found this really helpful site and thought I’d share it.

By the way the song is called "Little Green Bag" by George Baker

What on Earth is Meta Data?

This has been a truly enlightening experience for me. Mike Collett expressed it best when he introduced the panel to discuss Meta data .
He showed a picture of a red shed, well it was actually a blue shed which was labelled "RED SHED" and talked about the fact that the Meta data is present on the object. Basically, Meta data is the information about stuff.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1223/1474139927_c29efcdd43.jpg?v=0 For example this picture here.

  • When you click the link you’ll find that the meta data takes you to the correct place on flickr, and once there you’ll notice some information about the picture, when it was uploaded, tags (denoting ‘what it is about), who the creator was etc etc. All that is the metadata.
  • It is the meta data that allows you to embed the same picture in your blog if you wish.
  • It is meta data that allows you to link to this post, if you wish.
  • It is meta data that powers RSS. Delivers delicious and digg etc etc.

The reason I mention it is that I didn’t know that this morning, I knew all about the stuff I mentioned above but I didn’t know it was called meta data.

Click on the picture to link to the course details. International Standards cover everything from catering to construction. The subcommittee are meeting in Wellington this coming week to discuss the issues around digital media. None of this did I realise until part way through the day when I spoke with Carin Sundstedt who is the ‘Minister for Education’ – Sorry, no. She is the ‘Standards New Zealand’ representative on the International Standards Body . This is a recording of a conversation between myself and her as she tries valiantly to put me in the picture as to how this all came about. Click here.
