If sharing is the threat now…. What is hyper-civilisation going to look like when my kid hits college? Surely there is a premise here of get on board or get out of the way… Society is clearly heading down a certain path with technology and all it’s plug-ins. I have known for a long time that students are needing to understand the place of the internet and its tools for a productive economic life in the future but I have not really understood WHY before now. And according to Mark Pesce its because if they fail in grasping this stuff they will be disavantaged more than if I had never learnt to read or write.
The future looks nothing like democracy because democracy which sort to empower the individual is being obsolest by a social order that hyper empowers them.
The first Christians were referred to as “Followers of the Way”, hence the title of this post. My personal beliefs in God and Jesus Christ are not often mentioned in my blog….. however my two world collided tonight, I knew my church has just redesigned their website. But little did I realise that my Pastor, Paul Davison has his very own blog. I’m looking forward to reading this thoughts and ideas. He spent hours upon hours creating content, writing pieces and converting older (cassette recorded) studies into downloadable mp3 files.
I know Durff will probably be interested in this and others of you as well, having a church website like this, I think enables us all to access to the spiritual side of us that we all too often keep locked away, out of sight and mind of this frantic world.
The quality of those downloads is fantastic. Paul has a great ministry, both challenging and encouraging, well worth listening to.
I don’t remember where the story comes from but a grandson asks his grandfather.“Were you hero in the war?” And the Grandfather answers “No, I just fought beside some.”
It came to mind today as I sat and listened to the Minister of Education.
Just having a conversation with Durff about this Ning thing, more specifically how the majority of those involved are US, Australia/NZ, some from
Europe and then one or two from other places.
The point we were talking about was how do get those from other places, eg. Africa, Far East or
Eastern Europe involved? We are where we are and in contact (via Internet) with those we have contact with. How can we encourage those from further away involoved in the conversations in the Edublogosphere via Ning for example. As I am typing this I’m thinking about Second Life, but how we connect in there? TakingITGlobal has large numbers from around the globe, can we encourage them to spread their cyber-wings and join the conversation?
Hmmmmm is how we left our converstion. Any thoughts…Anybody?
The fear of what could go wrong can’t stop me from doing what’s right…
Chris Lehman’s interview with Steve Hargadon.
Having just read Durff’s blog about this subject i was compelled to share my trying something new each week.
When I listended to Ian Jukes last week he shared what Ted McCain was up to. Teaching through a project based curriculum. He wears different ‘Character’ hats to present challenges and projects to his class…. Well I thought I’d give it a go.
My class were due to start a house design and model project for technology so I entered with my hat with a “C” on it for the character and the name ‘Ted Hawkins’. Now Mr Hawkins is a developer who has bought two field on the outskirts of town and has divided it up into 20 sections for development. I divided the class into teams who are assigned to research, design and model their ‘Designer home’ for Ted to consider for his development. Now my kids are 7 and 8, they love Ted even if he is mean and project focused. I feel that even doing this for a just a week the children are beginning to apply themselves in an independent manner that surprised me for such a short period of time. Mr Evans the teacher is still around but he is only allowed to ask the teams questions and is not allowed to answer them because, as far as this project goes: “Mr Evans knows nothing and Mr Hawkins, well, he knows everything!”
My kids eagerly await the arrival of Mr Hawkins… they have lots of questions to ask him!
