On the Road 2: Learning@School
Here’s the latest episode of On the Road. A few rambling thoughts as I drive back from the conference. Excuse the car noise… If anyone has ideas about filtering background noise on Audacity let me know.

Some may have realized that I spent a little while this morning looking for the Motor Lodge type place called ‘The Embassey’….
Rest assured I did find Allanah. Though the arch, turn right and she’s staying at the AMBASSADOR!
What a great session chatting first thing this morning. Can’t talk about the content… We’re all under gag orders but just to say it’s IS good to talk and share our experiences and thoughts.
Thanks for breakfast. We should do it again….. In fact we should all ‘do’ breakfast one morning, maybe at ULearn.
I would like to say what a good time I’ve had here even though I have been stuck on my ’stand’ for large periods of time. I have really enjoyed talking to folk and appreciated the fact that so many of you stopped to chat. Note to self: I just need to arrange for the stand to be a little closer to the Blogger’s Cafe and I’m happy.
I have had a great day today.
So many highs, it’s unreal. Firstly I actually get chance to spend time in the bloggers cafe with old friends. Then I facilite a discussion on the Did you know? material. with Allanah live blogging it. An us all working together on a google doc. Head researcher Amaanda (sic) putting in the links as we go. If you’re interested our notes on the preceedings appear on slideshare. But be warned, to read it you need to download it. With promises of added information etc being made. I spent much of yesterday asking myself, “whose Nicki Gemmel, I know that name.” In fact it was not until I got to the session did she say Nix. and the penny finally dropped. A big thank you to all those present and contributing to the discussion. And those of you who joined in the live chat. I walked out smiling. If you want liking to the google doc just comment and fix you up.
Secondly, I managed to make it to Rachel’s presentation on social bookmarking- She had 41 on her list but I recken it was closer to 50. She worked so hard!
Then the conference dinner. I was able to chat with some old friends AND made some new ones. That is always good.
I even got to the dance floor and ‘got on down’ until I caught myself dancing like my old man and promptly jigged my way off the dance floor.
It’s now 1am and I’m feeling tired but happy. Got Breakfast with Jocelyn, Allanah and Greg tomorrow…. Anyone remember where the Embassy is? Under the thingys and turn right? Turn right and go under the thingys? Best ring in the morning!
Oddly it amused me and encouraged me to be waving frantically through the car window at Allanah on my way to dinner during the keynote.
It feels almost wrong to be a conference but to be missing out on the keynote- being on a stand seems alien at the moment. So feel free to come over and say hi during the breaks I on Breathe Technology stand in the foyer. Don’t be shy.
If only you could have seen me!
We legged it out of the restaurant and into the car at 8.35pm. Jenny drops me off on the corner of Fenton Street and I am running madly towards the Convention Centre hoping to be in time for the delegates exiting the keynote and walking past the stand.
Then my phone beep and it’s Amanda with a taxt to say that they are all leaving now! I’m still running remember trying to type back ‘Ta’. So now the freshly ironed shirt is looking a litttle worse for wear, I’m booting up the computers (x2) on the stand as everyone is filing past. I have zero time to say “Excuse me, would anyone like to go in the draw for some free technology training?”
By the time Amanada rocks up I must have looked a right idiot. Not at all professional!
Lucky for me though I am beating Jenny 6-1 on people signed up and have the advantage of having the stand to my self tomorrow morning- or is it this morning for it is incredibly late just now.
not to self: must take some pictures.

| Abstract | Karl Fisch produced a compelling PowerPoint entitled “Did you know?” What does it mean for New Zealand education? The new curriculum has leeway to build the curriculum that our communities deserve, but how are we, as educators, going to provide the learning contexts that will make education relevant for 21st century New Zealand. We will take a look at the works of Fisch, Friedman and others, and consider the impact upon us in the New Zealand context. This open mic discussion will enable participates to play an active role in envisioning New Zealand’s educational future, and our role in it. |
Here it is. All the info for my presentation. If you are yet to sign up for breakouts for Learning@Schools I’d appreciate you input, just click here for the list of breakout 4.
My Interactive Whiteboard and Literacy session is booked out. Which sounds great but there really is no indication as to how many each venue seats….. probably half a dozen for each of my sessions.
